"Affecting an Industry-wide Culture Change through mishap based continuation training"

Executive Leadership Program

The Check-6 Executive Leadership Program is designed to allow oil industry executives an opportunity to contrast and compare their culture, practices and policies against another high risk, high reliability industry…Naval Aviation. Senior Naval Aviators will discuss the evolution of their culture from inception to today. Along the way they will frankly highlight pitfalls and mistakes and how the organization matured from one that made progress through trial and error to one that now proactively and institutionally seeks progress prior to error. The course is introspective and engaging. It requires attendees to come prepared to participate in briefings, discussions and to fly the Marchetti SF60, similar to the F-16.

DAY 1: Taking Flight

The first day of the course is conducted for the most part in the air. Attendees are briefed and tutored on the characteristics of the Marchetti SF60 aircraft they will fly and techniques to win in aerial combat or “dog fight”. While an instructor will always accompany you, you will personally fly the airplane virtually the entire time you are airborne and will be expected to employ the techniques you have been taught. The point of this training is to allow you to experience flight as a serious, fact based business as you fight each other in mock combat. This track is designed to drive home the value of structured planning, execution and after action review that has made the Navy an example of risk management success. Flight management to include briefings, flight execution and post flight de-briefs will be conducted by fighter pilot instructors and based upon actual Naval Aviation training methods. At the end of the day, you will have experienced the thrill of aerial combat and learned the value of preparation, transparency, progress measurement and frank evaluation. Day one will also introduce you to handling the media. This training will feature both lectures and role-playing. You will be exposed to the same training that Admirals, Captains and other high profile Naval officers receive today and you will be taught by senior public relations professionals that were former US Navy public affairs officers.

DAY 2: Briefing Lab

The second day is designed to focus on leadership and its effect on organizational culture. It will explore how the aerial environment and the self-imposed requirements of pilots extended to creating the larger culture of Naval Aviation. You will be exposed to a history of Naval Aviation in terms of its maturation toward excellence. You will see the many mistakes we made and what we did to correct them. You will see how we morphed from a reactive organization to one that openly and actively looks for its weaknesses…then develops mitigation strategies for them. You will be required to provide team briefs on various components of the plan based execution model of Naval Aviation but in scenarios relative to the oil industry. You will be asked to consider movement from oil production to energy production. You will be asked to describe and understand strategic communications as it relates to policy management and information security.

SUMMARY

The Check-6 Executive Leadership program is different than any other executive program you have attended. It requires your commitment and participation, as much of what you experience will be outside your comfort zone. However, people who spent their careers outside their comfort zones will help you through this and who believe that organizational growth can only come through that type of exposure.
