Robert "Lex" Luthy
Robert “Lex” Luthy started with Check 6 in the fall of 2007 and is currently our Director of Leadership and Standardization. Lex served over 22 years in the United States Navy and Air Force retiring in 2008. He is also a pilot for Delta airlines.
Lex started his military career in 1986 and two years later was flying the F-14 Tomcat in Miramar, CA. His first squadron was VF-51, the Screaming Eagles. His flying acumen and experience with operations in Somalia and Iraq, earned him the opportunity to attend TOPGUN. After his initial tour, he was able go back to TOPGUN as one of their instructors from ’93-’96. At the Navy’s Fighter Weapon School, Lex worked on many systems and tactics development and was able to fly multiple aircraft including the F-16N, FA-18 and A-4F. His next assignment was with VF-211 in Oceana, VA as the Tactics Instructor and Operations Officer. Lex then moved his family to Fallon, NV to take over the Air Wing Training program for the next two years. He was responsible for the training of all Airwing (1200 personnel and over 50 aircraft) overland strike training.
The year 2000 brought big changes to the Luthy household. Lex left the active Navy and began his career with Delta Airlines moving to Atlanta, GA He joined VFA-203 in Atlanta, GA and spent the next two years as their Operations Officer, flying FA-18s. He also worked as a private consultant on many military programs.
In 2002, Lex went back on active duty, this time with the United States Air Force. Moving to his current residence in Edmond, OK and joining the 963rd AWACS squadron as their Deputy Commander. There he was in charge of the management of over 330 officers and enlisted men and women. He also served as the Director of Operations for the 966th, training over 730 students.
In 2006, he changed jobs again and took over the management of all Air Force flying regulations at the Air Force Flight Standards Agency. He also taught as an instructor of the Advanced Instrument School.
Raised in Virginia, Lex graduated from Virginia Tech in 1986 with a BS in Finance. He has over 6000 flight hours in over 10 different aircraft. He has 510 carrier landings and flown 44 combat sorties in support of SOUTHERN WATCH over Iraq.
He is married to the former Deborah Simpson of Idaho Falls, Idaho and has three sons, Michael, Christian, and Grant.
